Interesting story in Wikipedia. I looked because I was wondering about a possible royal presence in Ethiopia. Not anymore. The architecture, on the first picture, is very fortress-like.

    • Thanks Claude. The best way to learn about the end of the Ethiopian Empire is to read Kapuscinski’s ‘The Emperor’, about the downfall of Haile Selassie (Ras Tafari). Although the lives of former Ethiopian emperors and noblemen also read like shakespearean dramas.
Gondar itself is an old imperial capital of Ethiopia. The castles there were sacked by the Sudanese Mahdi’s (as they sacked all the churches except for a magnificent one just outside Gondar). By the end of the 19th century Addis Abeba became the new capital, founded by Emporor Menelik II, but the castles in Gondar were still partly in use. Especially the imperial archive, which however was destroyed by allied bombing in WWII.
